Finding the right face serum

Serums are concentrated treatments, so choose one around a specific concern rather than buying several at once. Vitamin C (morning) helps brighten the look of skin and defend against daily aggressors; hyaluronic acid adds lightweight hydration; niacinamide can help with oil balance, redness and the look of pores; retinol (evening) supports smoother, firmer-looking skin over time. Apply serums after cleansing and before moisturiser, going thinnest to thickest. Introduce stronger actives like retinol slowly, a few nights a week, and always wear SPF the next morning. Patch-test new products, and give any serum several weeks before judging results.

Can I use vitamin C and retinol together?

It is usually best to separate them: vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night. They work best at different pH levels, so layering them together can reduce effectiveness and increase the chance of irritation. Splitting them across AM and PM lets each work at full strength. Retinol also raises sun sensitivity, so keep it to evenings and wear SPF.

Can I use hyaluronic acid every day?

Yes. Unlike retinol or exfoliating acids, hyaluronic acid is gentle enough for daily, even twice-daily, use with little risk of irritation. It works best applied to slightly damp skin, then sealed with a moisturiser so it holds onto that water. On its own in very dry air it can feel less hydrating, so always layer a moisturiser over the top.

Can I use niacinamide with vitamin C and hyaluronic acid?

Yes, these three layer well together and will not cancel each other out. Apply the thinnest, most acidic product (usually vitamin C) first, then niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, finishing with moisturiser. If your skin is sensitive, introduce them one at a time so you can spot what suits you, and patch-test first.
