Unlike foundation, which prioritises coverage and a chosen finish, tinted moisturiser prioritises glow and comfort — so it tends to flatter dry and mature skin, where heavier bases can settle into lines. It’s less suited to anyone wanting to fully cover redness or blemishes, though you can spot-conceal where needed. Check the SPF: if it’s built in, look for broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, and treat anything lower as a bonus rather than your main sun protection.

What's the difference between tinted moisturiser and foundation?
Tinted moisturiser prioritises hydration and gives sheer, dewy coverage that evens tone in one step. Foundation prioritises coverage and finish, offering medium to full results in matte, satin or radiant. Tinted formulas often contain moisturising ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, so they feel lighter and more skin-like, but conceal less.
Is tinted moisturiser good for mature or dry skin?
Generally, yes. Its hydrating, sheer formula tends to sit more comfortably on dry and mature skin than heavier foundation, which can settle into fine lines and look cakey. The result is usually a natural, dewy finish. Prep with moisturiser first, and simply spot-conceal anything that needs a little extra coverage.
Do you still need sunscreen under a tinted moisturiser with SPF?
If yours has broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, it can cover everyday protection — though most people apply too little makeup to reach the labelled level.
