Getting the most from pre-shave prep
Pre-shave products prepare the skin and hair before you lather up, and are used before the shaving cream, not instead of it. A pre-shave oil adds a thin, slick layer that helps the razor glide and can reduce friction, tug and nicks, which is especially useful for coarse hair or sensitive skin. The single most important step, though, is warmth and water: a shower or warm flannel softens the hair far more than any product alone. Apply a few drops of oil to damp skin, massage in, then build your lather over the top. Use it sparingly, as too much oil can clog the razor and stop the lather forming properly.
Category questions
How do I use pre-shave oil?
Start with clean, warm, damp skin, ideally after a shower. Massage a few drops of oil evenly over the area for around 20 to 30 seconds, then wait a moment and apply your shaving cream or soap straight over the top. Shave as normal. A little is plenty, as too much oil stops the lather forming.
Do I really need a pre-shave oil?
It’s optional, not essential. Warm water and a good lather do most of the work. That said, many people with coarse hair, sensitive skin or a history of razor burn find a pre-shave oil noticeably reduces friction and irritation. It’s worth trialling for a week or two to see whether it improves your shave.
What's the difference between a pre-shave oil and a pre-shave cream?
Both prep the skin before lathering, but the feel differs. An oil forms a thin, slick barrier that boosts glide and suits coarse or sensitive skin. A pre-shave cream tends to focus on softening and hydrating the hair, and can feel less greasy. Some people even use them together; it comes down to personal preference.
