Choosing and using the right conditioner
Conditioner’s main job is to smooth the cuticle, replace moisture lost during cleansing and make hair easier to detangle. Most people benefit from using one after every shampoo, concentrating it on the mid-lengths and ends rather than the scalp, which can leave roots looking greasy. Fine or oily hair tends to prefer a lighter formula used a little less often, while dry, curly or coloured hair usually welcomes richer conditioning more frequently. Look for a texture that rinses clean without weighing hair down. If you want deeper repair now and then, that is a job for a mask rather than a heavier daily conditioner.
Category questions
How often should I use conditioner?
Most hair types can be conditioned after every wash. Fine or oily hair may only need it two or three times a week to avoid feeling weighed down, while dry, curly or damaged hair often benefits from conditioning every wash, or even between washes. Focus on the ends and adjust to how your hair feels.
Can I leave conditioner in my hair?
Only if it is a leave-in conditioner, which is formulated to stay in. Standard rinse-out conditioners are designed to be washed out after a minute or two; leaving them in can leave hair greasy or limp. For lasting moisture through the day, use a dedicated leave-in on damp hair instead.
Should I use conditioner on my scalp?
Generally no. Conditioner is meant to restore moisture to the hair itself, not the scalp, and applying it at the roots can make hair look oily sooner. Apply from about ear level down to the ends, where hair is oldest and driest, and keep it off the scalp unless a product says otherwise.
