How to choose an eau de toilette
Eau de toilette (EDT) sits at a lighter concentration than eau de parfum — typically around 5 to 15 per cent fragrance oil versus roughly 15 to 20 per cent — so it reads as fresher and closer to the skin. Expect roughly four to six hours of wear on most people, generally less than an eau de parfum, though skin type, the notes involved and how much you apply all make a difference. That lighter character makes EDT a natural pick for daytime, the office and warmer weather, when a heavier scent can feel overpowering. Spray onto pulse points, avoid rubbing, and reapply through the day if you want it to carry.
Category questions
How long does eau de toilette last?
On most skin an eau de toilette lasts roughly four to six hours, usually less than an eau de parfum because it contains less fragrance oil. Longevity varies with your skin type, the notes involved and how much you apply — fresh citrus scents tend to fade faster than woody or musky ones.
What's the difference between eau de toilette and eau de parfum?
The main difference is concentration. Eau de toilette holds around 5 to 15 per cent fragrance oil, while eau de parfum typically holds 15 to 20 per cent. That makes EDT lighter, fresher and shorter-lived, and often more affordable; EDP is richer and lasts longer. Many people wear EDT by day and save EDP for evenings.
Is eau de toilette good for summer?
Generally, yes. Its lighter concentration feels less heavy in heat, when warmth amplifies fragrance and a strong scent can become overwhelming. Fresh, citrus and aquatic EDTs suit warm days especially well. You may simply need to reapply once or twice, as lighter scents can fade faster in the sun.
