Match the shampoo to your scalp, not just your hair length. If your roots turn oily quickly, look for a clarifying or balancing formula and avoid heavy silicones and rich butters that can weigh hair down. If your lengths feel dry, damaged or colour-treated, a gentler, moisturising formula helps protect them. Sulphate-free shampoos use milder cleansers that many find kinder to sensitive scalps and colour, though a well-formulated sulphate shampoo can be gentle too — the formula matters more than the buzzword. Apply shampoo to the scalp and let the lather rinse through the ends, rather than scrubbing the lengths, which can cause dryness and breakage.

Is sulphate-free shampoo better?
Not automatically. Sulphate-free shampoos use milder surfactants that are less likely to strip natural oils, which can suit sensitive scalps, curly hair and colour-treated hair. However, a well-formulated sulphate shampoo can be just as gentle, and sulphate-free does not always mean it cleans less. The right choice depends on your scalp and hair, not the label alone.
Why is my hair greasy the day after washing?
Fast-returning grease is usually down to your scalp natural oil production, not poor washing. Over-washing or harsh products can strip oils and prompt the scalp to produce more to compensate. Heavy, moisturising shampoos on an oily scalp can add to it too. A gentler, balancing shampoo and gradually spacing out washes often helps settle things.
Should I put shampoo on my roots or ends?
Concentrate shampoo on your scalp and roots, where oil, sweat and product buildup collect. There is no need to scrub it through the lengths — the lather cleans the mid-lengths and ends as it rinses out. Working shampoo directly into dry ends can leave them stripped and prone to breakage. Save conditioner for the ends instead.
