How to choose and use beard oil

Beard oil is a conditioner for your facial hair and the skin beneath it. It’s typically a blend of carrier oils such as jojoba or argan, sometimes with a little essential oil for scent. Used regularly it can soften coarse hair, reduce that itchy, dry feeling in the early weeks and help tame flyaways, while moisturising the skin to ease flaking. Apply to a clean, towel-dried beard, ideally after a shower, working it down to the roots and skin. If your beard feels greasy or looks overly shiny, you’ve used too much. It won’t restyle a patchy beard, but it keeps the hair you have looking and feeling healthier.

Category questions

How often should I use beard oil and how many drops?

Once a day is enough for most people, usually in the morning after washing. As a rough guide, stubble to short beards need around 3 to 5 drops, medium beards 4 to 8, and long beards 8 or more. Start with less and add more only if needed, as excess just leaves the beard greasy.

Does beard oil help your beard grow faster or fill patches?

Honestly, no. There’s no reliable evidence that beard oil speeds growth or fills gaps, as that’s mostly down to genetics and hormones. What it does do is condition the hair and skin so an existing beard looks fuller, healthier and less wiry. For genuine growth concerns, it’s best to speak to a GP or dermatologist.

When should I apply beard oil, and can I leave it in?

Apply to a clean, towel-dried beard that’s slightly damp, as oil absorbs best then, typically after a shower. It’s a leave-in product, so massage it through the hair and into the skin and don’t rinse it out. Comb through to distribute evenly. For longer beards you might reapply in the evening in dry or cold weather.
