What a post-shave balm does
Shaving removes hair but also strips moisture and lightly abrades the skin, which is why the face can feel tight or irritated afterwards. A post-shave balm is a moisturising, usually alcohol-free lotion designed to calm and rehydrate freshly shaved skin. Soothing ingredients such as aloe, witch hazel or allantoin can help reduce the look of redness and that raw, tight feeling. Balms are thicker and more nourishing than a splash aftershave and do not sting. Apply a small amount to clean, damp skin straight after rinsing off any lather. If your skin runs dry or you shave in cold weather, a balm is generally kinder than an alcohol-based aftershave.

What's the difference between a post-shave balm and an aftershave?
A traditional aftershave is usually alcohol-based, made mainly for fragrance and a brief cooling, tightening feel, but it can sting and dry the skin. A balm is a thicker, typically alcohol-free moisturiser that soothes and hydrates without the burn. If your skin feels tight or irritated after shaving, a balm is generally the gentler choice.
Can I use a post-shave balm and an aftershave together?
Yes. Some people apply a scented aftershave for fragrance, then follow with a balm to rehydrate and calm the skin. If you have sensitive skin, a balm alone is often enough. Give the aftershave a moment to settle first, then smooth the balm over the top to lock in moisture.
When and how should I apply a post-shave balm?
Use it straight after shaving, once you’ve rinsed away any remaining lather and patted the skin dry. Warm a small amount, roughly pea-sized, between your fingers and smooth it gently over the shaved area. A little goes a long way. You can also use it on the days you don’t shave if the skin feels dry.
