How to build a haircare routine that works

Start with your scalp and hair type rather than the label on the bottle. A good routine does three jobs: cleansing, conditioning and protecting. Shampoo belongs on the scalp, where oil and buildup collect; conditioner belongs on the mid-lengths and ends, which are older and drier. How often you wash depends on your scalp — fine or oily hair may need it every two to three days, while coarse, curly or textured hair often does well with one or two washes a week. If hair feels dry and snaps easily it may want more moisture; if it feels limp or mushy when wet, an occasional protein treatment can help. Build slowly and stay consistent.

Hair products are used often, so texture, scent and ingredient quality matter as much as results. This edit favours formulas that feel good to use, suit real routines and avoid unsupported claims.

Category questions

How often should I wash my hair?

There is no single rule — it depends on your scalp and hair type. Dermatologists suggest most people wash every two to three days, though fine or oily hair may need it more often, and coarse, curly or afro hair often only once or twice weekly. Washing too frequently can strip natural oils, so let how your scalp feels guide you.

Does my hair need protein or moisture?

Healthy hair needs both, but the balance depends on porosity. Hair that feels dry, rough or brittle usually wants more moisture. Hair that feels limp, overly stretchy or mushy when wet — often after heat or colouring — may benefit from protein to strengthen the strand. If you are unsure, focus on moisture first and add protein occasionally.

What order should I apply hair products in?

Cleanse first with shampoo, then condition — applying conditioner before shampoo can stop hair getting properly clean. After the shower, layer from lightest to heaviest: leave-in treatments first, then creams, finishing with oils or serums on the ends. Applying products to damp hair helps them absorb and spread more evenly.
