Choosing and applying a daily facial SPF
Daily sun protection is one of the most evidence-backed skincare steps, mainly for guarding against UV-related ageing and skin damage. For everyday use, dermatology bodies generally suggest a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30. The catch is quantity: the SPF on the bottle assumes a generous layer (roughly 2mg per cm2), and most people apply far less. A useful guide for the face and neck is around two fingers length of product, or about a quarter to half a teaspoon. Apply it as the last step of your morning skincare, and reapply every couple of hours when you are out in the sun.
Category questions
How much sunscreen should I apply to my face?
More than most people use. A helpful guide is the two-finger method: squeeze sunscreen along the length of your index and middle fingers for the face and neck, roughly a quarter to half a teaspoon. Applying too little means you get well below the SPF stated on the bottle.
Do I need to wear SPF every day, even indoors?
Dermatologists generally recommend daily SPF year-round. UVB (burning) rays are mostly blocked by glass, but UVA rays — linked to ageing and pigmentation — can pass through windows and are present even on cloudy days. If you sit near a window or by screens for long periods, daily protection is sensible.
Should I reapply sunscreen over makeup?
Ideally yes, roughly every two hours when you are in the sun. Reapplying over makeup is easier with formats made for it — a powder SPF, an SPF mist, or dabbing a cream sunscreen on with a damp sponge rather than rubbing. Tapping gently helps preserve your makeup while topping up protection.
