Getting the most from a hair oil

Hair oil is a finishing and conditioning step that smooths frizz, adds shine and helps seal in moisture. A little goes a long way: warm a drop or two between your palms and work it through the mid-lengths and ends, keeping it off the roots so hair does not look greasy. On damp hair it helps lock in moisture and prep for styling; on dry hair it tames flyaways and boosts shine. If you are new to oiling, start with a small amount once a week and build up. Drier or coarser hair often suits more frequent use; fine or oily hair usually needs less.

Category questions

Do I use hair oil on wet or dry hair?

Both work, with slightly different results. On damp hair, oil helps lock in moisture, aids detangling and preps for styling; blot excess water first so hair is not dripping. On dry hair, a smaller amount smooths frizz and adds shine to finished styles. Either way, focus on the mid-lengths and ends and use sparingly.

How much hair oil should I use?

Start small, usually a drop or two for most lengths, and add more only if needed. Warm it between your palms and distribute through the ends first. Using too much, or applying it at the roots, is the most common cause of greasy, weighed-down hair, so it is easier to build up gradually than to fix an over-oiled result.

Can I leave hair oil in overnight?

Yes. A pre-wash oiling treatment, applied to lengths and ends and left on for an hour or overnight before shampooing, can help condition drier hair. Protect your pillow with a towel and wash thoroughly afterwards. For everyday shine, though, a small amount smoothed through styled hair and left in is usually all that is needed.
