How to build a simple body-care routine

A complete routine usually moves from cleansing to exfoliating to moisturising. Body washes lift away sweat, sunscreen and grime; gentle, fragrance-free formulas with glycerin or oatmeal suit drier skin, while richer washes with ceramides or plant oils help skin feel less tight afterwards. A scrub once or twice a week clears dulling dead cells before you moisturise. Lock in hydration while skin is still damp: lotions give lightweight everyday moisture, creams and body butters suit very dry skin, and oils seal water in as a final step. Match texture to how dry your skin feels, and adjust with the seasons.

Category questions

What order should I use bath and body products in?

Cleanse first with a body wash, then exfoliate with a scrub if it’s a scrub day (once or twice a week). Rinse, pat skin until just damp, and moisturise straight away. If you layer, apply water-based lotion or cream first, then finish with oil to seal the moisture in.

How often should I moisturise my body?

Most people benefit from moisturising daily, ideally within a few minutes of showering while skin is still slightly damp, as this helps trap water. Very dry skin may need it twice a day. In colder months, switching from a light lotion to a richer cream can help skin feel less tight.

Do I need separate products for face and body?

Generally yes. Facial skin is thinner and more prone to breakouts, so body products, which are often richer or more fragranced, may feel heavy or clog pores on the face. Body washes and scrubs are also formulated for tougher body skin, not the delicate face.
