How to exfoliate your body safely

A body scrub sloughs away dead surface cells, which can leave skin feeling smoother and looking brighter, and helps moisturiser absorb better afterwards. Use it on clean, wet skin, massaging gently in circular motions for around 30 to 60 seconds, focusing on rougher areas like elbows, knees and heels. Frequency matters more than pressure: once or twice a week suits most people, and over-scrubbing can disrupt the skin barrier and cause irritation. Dry or sensitive skin should scrub less often, delicate areas need a lighter touch, and you should always moisturise straight after while skin is freshly cleansed and ready to absorb it.

Category questions

How often should you use a body scrub?

For most people, once or twice a week is plenty. Dry skin should stick to about twice a week at most, oily or congested skin can handle up to three times, and sensitive skin is best limited to once a week. Over-exfoliating can irritate skin and weaken its protective barrier.

Do you use body scrub before or after soap?

After. Cleanse with your body wash or soap first to remove surface oil and dirt, then use the scrub so it can reach and lift the dead skin cells underneath. Rinse well, then moisturise immediately while skin is clean and damp.

Is body scrub good for your skin?

Used correctly, yes. Gentle, occasional exfoliation may help skin feel smoother and can improve how well moisturiser sinks in. The risk comes from scrubbing too hard or too often, which can damage the skin barrier and increase irritation, so keep it gentle and infrequent.
