Getting the most from body oil
Body oil works differently from a lotion. Rather than adding water, it acts as an occlusive, sitting on the surface to seal in moisture and help prevent water loss, while leaving a subtle glow. It’s especially useful for dry or dull skin. The trick is timing: apply to slightly damp skin straight after a shower so there’s moisture to trap, using a little warmed between the palms and smoothed on in long strokes. If you also use lotion, apply that first, then finish with oil on top. Those prone to oily or breakout-prone skin may prefer to use it sparingly.
Category questions
Do you use body oil before or after lotion?
After. Apply your water-based lotion or cream first so the hydration reaches your skin, then smooth oil over the top as the final step. Oil is an occlusive that seals moisture in, so putting it on first can block the lotion from absorbing properly.
How do you use body oil?
Use it on slightly damp skin, ideally right after showering when skin still holds surface moisture. Warm a few drops between your hands, then massage over the body in long strokes. A little goes a long way, so start with one or two pumps per limb and add more only if needed.
Does body oil actually moisturise skin?
It helps skin stay moisturised, but works by sealing rather than adding water. Oil forms a barrier that reduces moisture loss and softens skin. For dry skin, pairing it with a water-based lotion underneath often gives better results than oil alone, since the lotion supplies hydration for the oil to lock in.
