How to choose a fragrance
Fragrances are grouped into scent families — fresh (citrus, aquatic), floral, woody and oriental (amber, vanilla, spice) — which is the quickest way to narrow your choice. Every scent also unfolds in three stages: bright top notes, a heart that emerges after a few minutes, and a base that lingers for hours. Concentration matters too: eau de parfum holds more perfume oil (around 15 to 20 per cent) and lasts longer than eau de toilette (roughly 5 to 15 per cent), while aftershave and cologne are lighter still. Because your skin warmth, pH and natural oils change how a scent develops, always test on your wrist and wait for the dry-down before buying — never judge from the bottle or a paper strip alone.
Fragrance is personal, so this edit focuses on well-made scents with character and staying power — plus miniatures and discovery options when you want to try before committing.
Category questions
What is the difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette?
Eau de parfum contains a higher concentration of perfume oil (around 15 to 20 per cent) than eau de toilette (roughly 5 to 15 per cent), so it smells richer, projects more and typically lasts six to eight hours versus four to six. Eau de toilette is lighter and fresher, ideal for daytime and warm weather; eau de parfum suits evenings or when you want longer wear.
Where should you apply perfume?
Spray onto pulse points — the wrists, base of the neck, behind the ears and the inner elbows — where skin is warmer and helps the scent develop. Apply to clean, moisturised or slightly damp skin so it holds better, then let it dry naturally. Do not rub your wrists together: the friction and heat break down the delicate top notes and shorten how long it lasts.
How do I make my perfume last longer?
Apply to moisturised or freshly showered skin, as fragrance clings better when skin is hydrated. Concentrate on warm pulse points, spray rather than dab, and do not rub it in. Choosing an eau de parfum over an eau de toilette helps, and spritzing clothing or hair holds scent longer than skin. Store bottles away from heat and sunlight to protect them.
