How to choose and use a facial oil

A facial oil is an occlusive step, not a substitute for hydration. It sits on top of your water-based products to help seal in moisture and support the skin barrier, rather than adding water itself. Because it forms the outer layer, an oil generally goes last in your routine, after moisturiser, and tends to suit evenings best. Look at the ingredients rather than the label: lightweight, non-comedogenic oils such as squalane or jojoba are often better tolerated by oilier and combination skin, while richer oils suit drier types. Patch test anything new, and introduce one product at a time.

Category questions

When do I apply facial oil — before or after moisturiser?

Generally after. Oils are occlusive, so an oil can penetrate a moisturiser, but a moisturiser can’t easily penetrate an oil. Applying your water-based or cream moisturiser first, then sealing with a few drops of oil, helps lock in hydration. Most people find oils work best as the final step of an evening routine.

Is facial oil good for oily or acne-prone skin?

It can be, if you choose carefully. Lightweight, non-comedogenic oils such as squalane or jojoba are usually better tolerated and less likely to clog pores. If your skin is very breakout-prone or you’re using acne treatments, introduce oils cautiously, patch test first, and consider speaking to a professional before adding one.

Can I wear facial oil under sunscreen in the morning?

It’s usually better to keep pure oils for the evening. Applied underneath sunscreen, facial oils can interfere with how the SPF film sits on the skin and may reduce its protection. In the morning, moisturise, then apply sunscreen as your final skincare step instead.
