Making sense of the treat and target step

This is the step where you address specific concerns — dullness, uneven tone, fine lines, blemishes or dryness — using serums, targeted treatments and eye products. These tend to hold higher concentrations of active ingredients, so they sit after cleansing and before your moisturiser, applied thinnest to thickest. The most reliable results come from consistency and patience rather than piling on products: introduce one active at a time, give it several weeks, and patch test first. Some ingredients suit different times of day — vitamin C is popular in the morning and retinoids in the evening — and strong actives should always be paired with daily SPF.

Category questions

What order do I apply serums and treatments in?

After cleansing (and any toner), apply your treatments from thinnest to thickest texture, then follow with moisturiser. If you use more than one, water-based serums go before creamier ones. Give each a moment to absorb, and keep eye products to a gentle pat around the orbital bone.

Can I use vitamin C and retinol together?

It’s usually better to separate them. Many people use vitamin C in the morning and a retinoid at night, as the two work best at different pH levels and combining them can increase irritation. Niacinamide, by contrast, layers comfortably with most actives. Whatever you add, introduce it slowly.

How long before treatments show results?

Skincare works gradually. Most serums and active treatments need consistent use over roughly 6 to 12 weeks before visible changes, reflecting the skin’s natural renewal cycle. If a product causes persistent stinging, redness or breakouts, scale back the frequency or stop, and seek professional advice if concerns continue.
