When to reach for a richer cream

Creams sit at the richer end of the moisturiser scale, with more oil and less water than a standard lotion. That thicker texture forms more of a barrier on the skin’s surface, which helps prevent moisture loss and keeps dry, tight or flaky areas feeling supple. They’re well suited to dry and very dry skin, and to harsher winter months when lighter lotions may not be enough. For everyday balanced skin a lotion is often plenty; save creams and body butters for when skin genuinely feels parched. As always, apply to slightly damp skin to lock hydration in.

Category questions

Should I use a body cream or a body lotion?

Choose based on how dry your skin feels. Normal to slightly dry skin usually does well with a lighter lotion, medium-dry skin suits a cream, and very dry skin may need the richest option, a body butter. Many people also switch to a cream in winter when skin gets drier.

Is body cream better for very dry skin?

Often, yes. Because cream contains more oil, it forms a stronger barrier that helps seal in moisture and protect cracked, tight skin. For extremely dry areas like elbows, knees and heels, a thick cream or body butter may give more lasting comfort than a thin lotion.

Can I use body cream every day?

Yes. Daily use is fine and often helpful for dry skin. Apply after showering while skin is damp for best absorption. If a rich cream ever feels too heavy in warmer weather, you can switch to a lighter lotion and save the cream for drier patches or colder months.
